Hidden deep within the woods, and only visible once you're within a few metres of it, this is the essence of 'hidden'. No brilliant routes but no terrible ones either. Most folk will come here the once, do everything and leave, but some will surely come back for the sunshine and friendly soloing.
A fine-grained south-facing, winter sun-trap and the routes are worth a visit with a rope. The quarry hides behind a curtain of trees which lend it a peaceful aura that probably makes the climbing seem better than it is.
Park in Bowden Bridge car park and continue along the road on foot for 120m. Follow a faint track on the left (opposite the driveway after the last house on the right). The track is unclear to begin with but soon becomes more obvious, while still overgrown.
The scene of the Kinder trespass in 1932 has no access problems these days. Climbers and walkers should keep dogs under control at all times to avoid disturbing moorland birds and grazing sheep. There is occasional grouse shooting on the moors above Edale and access is not permitted during these periods.
Dates: 15 March to 30 June
Reason: Nesting Birds
The restriction applies to all routes in the Ampitheatre Area of Kinder Downfall (ie from The Owl Of Minerva to The Downfall Climb) to prevent disturbance to nesting birds. There are no comments from visitors to this crag. |
