After much anticipation UKClimbing/UKHillwalking are happy to announce the winners of the 2014/15 Marmot Photography Awards. We have split the prize-giving into two sections - the winners in each category, and then from those, the three top overall winners. These are presented below for your viewing pleasure. It was a hotly contested event, with a strong field of great images, but the winners really do represent the cream of the crop - congratulations to all those involved.
In terms of the structure, the overall winners have been selected by Marmot's very own Tim Glasby. Tim has worked closely with Marmot for many years, with images of all their key athletes to his name - Steve McClure, Lucy Creamer, Neil Mawson, Jack Geldard, and Leah Crane - just to name a few. Alongside his top three choices he has offered a paragraph on why he made his decision.
About Tim:
Tim has travelled the world on assignment for many of the best clients in the industry, including editorial work for The Times, The IOD, GQ and National Geographic Adventure; and for commercial clients such as Red Bull, Adidas Eyewear, Marmot, Vans and Edelmans Advertising. How to Enter for 2016 - Entry is automatic, all you need to do is upload your best shots to the UKC Photo Gallery for your chance to be a part of next year's Photography Awards.
Finally, a special word of thanks to Marmot for their support of the Photography Awards/Photo Galleries - without their fantastic selection of prizes the Awards wouldn't be the same.
The Top 3
Tim's comments:
For me this image had the 'wow' factor. It’s technically impeccable, the composition and exposure are both spot on. There’s a real depth to James' image. The Tre Cime are one of the most instantly recognisable and iconic views in the mountain world and James' image totally nailed it, the moon is just the icing on the cake. Great photo James.
Prize: Marmot Quark Sleeping Bag (RRP £300)
Tim's comments:
Good timing, contrast and composition made this bouldering shot stand out for me. It’s a nice balance between climber and environment which gives the shot a good perspective. Sean's use of light and the climber's red shirt contrasts well against the forests green foliage and really pulls the viewer's eye onto the climber. Great job Sean.
Prize: Marmot Sawtooth Sleeping Bag (RRP £200)
Tim's comments:
Kieran's shot has buckets full of 'feel good factor'. It makes me want to grab a camera and race up the nearest hill ready for sunset. It’s evocative and that for me is what a great shot should be. It immediately takes me back to times spent on the hills and mountains with dear friends. The colours and exposure are spot on. The composition, although its not classic 'rule of thirds', totally works in this instance. Kieran, I love this shot.
Prize: Marmot Trestles Sleeping Bag (RRP £100)
Category Winners
Each of the category winners will receive a Marmot Gear Hauler.
The Gear Hauler is designed - quite simply - to carry all your climbing equipment to and from the crag. Featuring a 100D Mini Ripstop fabric it is build to last even the toughest treatment. Whether your on approach via track, trail or more technical scramble the Gear Hauler's waist belt can be tucked away neatly or used to take the burden from your shoulders.
A large front opening zip means access is easy and the compression straps mean that the bag feels snug and secure, even if only partly loaded. It also gives you somewhere to carry those extras if you are packing a heavy load.
